Born to Anna Smith and William Martin on November 2, 1931, Joe was raised
in the Marine Park area of Brooklyn, NY, with his siblings, Bill, Mary, George, and Harry. There he developed an early and passionate interest in aviation. He was an avid modeler of scaled airplanes. His visits to local air fields with his brother Harry would
inspire a lifelong interest in aviation design, technology and safety.
A childhood survivor of pre-antibiotic pneumonia, Joe entered the US Marine
Corps during the Korean War. He began his career in aviation working on
F9-H Panthers at MCAS Cherry Point, NC. He would later work at Lockheed in
New York and complete a 33 yr career at Trans World Airlines in New York
and Los Angeles. At TWA, he progressed from mechanic to inspector and
contributed daily to collective efforts in forwarding aviation safety. He
was also an accomplished commercial pilot and instructor, a member of the
Experimental Aircraft Association, and a restorer and enthusiast of
historic aircraft.
Joe was a strong civic participant. After moving with his first wife Mary
Martin and their loving family to Irvine, CA in 1970, he joined the Irvine
Bike Trails Committee and contributed to early plans for the city's
acclaimed bike trails. After his retirement from TWA, he became Vice
Commodore of the American Legion Yacht Club in Newport Beach. He would
later marry Doris Martin, and build and share a new home in Oceanside, CA
where together they became advocates and supporters of the city's airport.
He is survived by his wife Doris and her extraordinary children Kathy,
Debbie, Gene, and Erica; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and by four wonderful sons and their wives whom he shared with Mary Martin; Tom and Hillarie,George, Tim and Liane, and Larry. He is also survived by sisters Mary
Palmer, Judith Dolson and Peggy Chapman, and brother Lawrence Finch, six grandchildren, and his dog Lucky.
Services will be held on Tuesday, February 7th at 1:30 pm at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr. , San Diego
